Replace on the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act – CU Denver Information
The following is a memo to CU Denver faculty and staff from CFO Todd Haggerty and Chief Human Resources Officer Carolyn Brownawell.
On Jan. 1, 2021, the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act went into effect in an effort to increase pay equity and transparency, apply new notice and recordkeeping requirements, and encourage regular review of compensation practices. This is a forward-looking step by our State that requires all employers to post job openings with salary ranges and to regularly examine pay levels and practices for inequities. Our campus is working through all of the details to ensure we are compliant with the new legislation
CU Denver is committed to an inclusive and equitable workplace that uses best practices in compensation. We take the law and this issue seriously and have conducted a third-party equity study to examine salaries and positions at CU Denver to ensure a holistic and objective review. Of the 1,500 positions reviewed in the study, only ~3% were flagged as outliers, which speaks to the work we have already done and informs us on the next steps. This is an ongoing process that will require continual review, but we are well on our way.
Employees should understand that the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and our corresponding third-party equity study are not designed to result in wide-spread salary changes, revise current job titles or working titles, or reduce pay or eliminate jobs. We are hard at work analyzing results and expect that any adjustments that need to be made as a result of the equity study to become effective in fiscal year 2021-22.
