Malik Reed’s preliminary Year 2 report card is in, and according to Broncos coach Vic Fangio, the outside linebacker needs to continue “to improve a little bit at everything.”

The 24-year-old earned a role with the Broncos last season as an undrafted rookie out of Nevada, making the 53-man roster out of training camp and then getting eight starts due to Bradley Chubb’s season-ending knee injury in Week 4.

It’s been a similar story this season, as the ankle injury that’s kept Von Miller from taking the field has resulted in more opportunities for Reed alongside veteran backup Jeremiah Attaochu. Reed has 12 tackles, and one tackle for loss, in four games played (and one start) in 2020.

“He’s a second-year player who has been thrust into action in both seasons — and probably before he was ready — due to injuries,” Fangio said. “He got a lot of playing time last year and has obviously gotten a lot of playing time this year, and he’s taken advantage of the opportunities… (Reed must improve) in run defense, pass defense, pass coverage, all the job descriptions that you need to be able to do as an outside linebacker.”

Considering Attaochu is dealing with a quadricep injury that’s kept him from practicing over the past couple weeks, Reed’s likely to get his second start of the season Sunday in Foxborough opposite Bradley Chubb. Rookie Derrek Tuszka could also see increased time at a position where the Broncos currently have Austin Calitro and Justin Strnad on injured reserve in addition to Miller.
